When do I need an O licence for my van?
In most cases, an operator’s licence is required only for goods vehicles or public service vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (t). However, in 2022, the UK introduced new regulations extending the requirement to certain vehicles between 2.5t and 3.5t, meaning that without the appropriate licence, operations could be deemed unlawful.
Determining the Need for an Operator’s Licence
We are often asked, “Do I need an operator’s licence for my van?” The answer depends primarily on two factors:
1. The maximum authorised mass (MAM) or gross train weight (GTW) of the vehicle or vehicle-trailer combination.
2. The purpose for which the vehicle is used.
Finding Your Vehicle’s MAM and GTW
These details are typically found in the vehicle’s owner’s manual or on a plate or sticker affixed to the vehicle.
Situations Where an Operator’s Licence Is Not Required
An operator’s licence is not needed if:
The van’s MAM is up to and including 3.5t, and it is used exclusively within the UK.
Goods are transported outside the UK, but not for hire and reward.
What Is Hire and Reward?
“Hire and reward” generally refers to carrying goods for someone else. If you only transport your own goods, this usually does not qualify as hire and reward.
Vehicles Requiring an Operator’s Licence
An operator’s licence is necessary for vehicles used to transport goods in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland for hire and reward under these configurations:
Vans with a MAM between 2.5t and 3.5t.
Vans or cars towing a trailer with a GTW between 2.5t and 3.5t.
Steps to Obtain an Operator’s Licence
If your operation falls within these parameters, here’s what to do:
1. For those without an operator’s licence: Apply for one.
2. If you already have a licence:
Standard international licence: Add your van(s) to your existing licence.
Standard national licence: Upgrade to a standard international licence.
Restricted licence: Upgrade to a standard international licence.
